Manu fell in love with the pianist Stella Panini when he was a child and it's been his dream to meet her ever since. To achieve his dream he follows the advice of Stefano Salegi, a shady character who becomes his manager and forms a band. But, not just an energetic dreamer, Manu is an outsider with problems finding his place in society. That's clear by the instrument he's chosen —none other than the broom— that he uses to make music and carry the rhythm. That won't keep him from starting a band completely sui generis that breaks all the clichés.

Dean extrapolated landscape images from 1920s Ford advertisements, leaving out the cars to focus on their representations of place and nature. She made the animation using a digital version of a multiplane camera technique employed in early Disney films to create an immersive and 3D illusion by separating two-dimensional images. This technique was itself inspired by Ford’s assembly line; Dean uses it to explore historical depictions of the American dream, exaggerating the subject matter’s fantastical style. Summer has arrived in the Japanese countryside. Hiroo, a mischievous 10-year-old boy, is playing with his mother when an army jeep pulls up in a cloud of dust. An officer and his sidekick emerge. They are there to enlist the child and turn him into a soldier in the service of the Emperor. Against all odds, Hiroo refuses and runs away. The two soldiers give chase, but Hiroo's mother intervenes, risking her life.

After reading a magazine article titled “Six Tips for When You’re Dying Inside,” a woman holed up in her apartment follows the advice to “create a tranquil corner” in her home by lighting scented candles. The different smells combine and magically bestow her with the power to shoot flames out of her eyes and shape-shift.
