Suzuki began to take an interest in manga in college after being impressed by works such as those of Yoshiharu Tsuge . In 1968, he entered a competition with his first manga, The Doll's Suspicion , but did not win the main prize. Encouraged, he submitted other works and won honorable mentions. He began to seriously consider a career asmangaka
Despite a difficult start with major publishing houses in Tokyo, he attracted the attention of Shonen Jump with his work Hidejiro Hanada . He then published series in Bessatsu Shonen Jump and Garo . In 1975, a decisive turning point came when he was contacted by Weekly Shonen Champion . His series Byokudaisho became a success, as did Ah !! Hana no Oendan (嗚呼!!花の応援団), which was adapted into a film in 1976.
